GRANARD TOWN
Granard is the second largest town in County Longford and sits on the N55 route between the Midlands and the border counties. The town is surrounded by scenic spots like Lough Gowna and Derrycassin Woods. Granard’s name has several possible meanings, including The Hill of the Sun, The Hill of the Grain, or Ugly Height.
These names may refer to its most striking feature, a large Norman earthwork at the west end of the main street. This earthwork, the largest in Ireland, became the site of a castle built in 1199 by Richard Tuite after Hugh de Lacy granted him the land. Granard has a rich and interesting history, mentioned often in old records, and is a great place to visit.
